Voters send message at polls

NANCE COUNTY — Americans across the country went to the polls on Tuesday to decide the direction of the future.

Nance County residents returned 1,864 ballots in this week’s General Election. Voter turnout in the county was an eye-popping 77.44 percent. Nebraska’s statewide voter turnout was 73.9 percent.

Between voting for the next U.S. President and deciding on a handful of ballot initiatives, resident had plenty of choices to make this election.

Presidential Ticket

Nance County residents chose former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris, 1,456 to 351. The Third Congressional District supported Trump over Harris 236,522 to 69,774. The First Congressional District supported Trump over Harris 172,335 to 129,714. Harris did secure one electoral vote from the Second Congressional District, edging Trump 153,618 to 142,486.

Trump secured his return to the White House after receiving more than 270 electoral votes. He also won the popular vote.

Senatorial Ticket

Nance County voters chose Republican Deb Fischer over Independent Dan Osborn 1,239 to 573. Fischer was reelected by the state, receiving 487,661 votes to Osborn’s 417,801. She will serve a six-year term.

Nance County voters chose Republican Pete Ricketts over Democrat Preston Love Jr., 11,467 to 305. Ricketts was reelected by the state, receiving 571,281 votes to Love’s 333,401 votes. He will serve a two-year term.

Congressional Ticket

Nance County voters chose Republican Adrian Smith over Democrat Daniel Ebers, 1,430 to 291. Smith was reelected to the Third Congressional District of the U.S. House of Representatives, receiving 241,818 votes to Ebers’ 58,823 votes. He will serve a two-year term.

County Ticket

There were no surprises in the Nance County Supervisor race. Three Republican candidates were running for the three open seats. Andrew Ditter received 1,115 votes. Scott Russell received 1,046 votes. Ralph “Butch” Horacek received 1,014 votes.

School Board Races

Fullerton School Board

Newcomer Brittany Bertram (504 votes) joins incumbents Brad Anderson (484 votes) and Brian L. Aaberg (443 votes) on the Fullerton Schools Board of Education. Dillion M. Busch (432 votes), David Reilly (432 votes) and David Ciancio (208 votes) were also on the ballot. Ciancio lost his bid for reelection.

Twin River School Board

Jennifer Swantek was the top vote-getter with 840 votes. Newcomer Alex Cornwell (643 votes) joins incumbents Swantek and John Reeg (635 votes) on the Twin River Schools Board of Education. Dan Preister (493 votes), Jaysen L. Melcher (460 votes) and Connie Brandenburger-Worden (316 votes) were also on the ballot.

City Ticket

Genoa City Council

Brett Pearson (270 votes) and Jennifer R. Quintanilla (191 votes) were elected the Genoa City Council. Al Benson was also on the ballot and received 171 votes.

Village Ticket

Belgrade Village Board

Mike Choyeski (44 votes) and Daniel D. Cornwell (38 votes) were elected to the Belgrade Village Board. Seth Nelson was on the ballot and received 23 votes. Voters submitted 27 ballots without voting for any candidate.

Belgrade Village Lottery

Belgrade residents overwhelmingly approved a measure allowing a lottery in the village. The measure passed 52 to 8. Belgrade residents previously voted in favor of a similar question. This is the first step in allowing The Corn Krib to apply for a license to offer Keno.

Ballot Initiatives

Initiative Measure 434 (Abortion Protections)

Nance County voters were in favor of the initiative 1,329 to 452. Nebraska voters approved the measure 496,586 to 401,072.

Referendum Measure 435 (Repeal Section 1 of Bill 1402)

Nance County residents voted to repeal 996 to 624. Nebraska voters voted to repeal 492,478 to 370,542.

Initiative Measure 436 (Paid Sick Leave)

Nance County voters were in favor of the initiative 1,110 to 475. Nebraska voters approved the measure 638,737 to 221,309.

Initiative Measure 437 (Cannabis)

Nance County voters were in favor of the initiative 1,007 to 601. Nebraska voters approved the measure 614,236 to 254,079.

Initiative Measure 438 (Cannabis)

Nance County voters were in favor of the initiative 901 to 694. Nebraska voters approved the measure 578,375 to 285,573.

Initiative Measure 439 (Abortion Legalized)

Nance County voters rejected the initiative 1,285 to 496. Nebraska voters rejected the measure 462,756 to 436,750.
