FULLERTON — The Nance County Sheriff’s Office has responded to two bald eagles hit by vehicles in Nance County in the last week.
One eagle was hit on Highway 14 south of the overflow bridge. When deputies arrived the eagle was alive and alert. the Nebraska Raptor Recovery Center was called and the eagle was transported to the center. The other eagle was struck on Highway 22 east of Pappy’s gas station. Deputies were able to collect the eagle alive, unfortunately it died on the way to the Sheriff’s office. Both incidences were reported to the Nebraska Game and Parks per procedure and state statue.
Both eagles were eating dead raccoons on the side of the highway.
The Sheriff’s office has been in contact with the state department of roads and efforts are being taken to remove road kill from the highways as quick as possible to prevent eagles being hit on the highways in the future. Deputies and road crews will actively be removing dead animals from the road way as fast as possible.
Please remember if you see eagles eating a carcass on the side of the road, slow down and allow the eagle to fly away. These are large birds with 6 foot wingspans, they are slow to take off, and move out of the road way. Eagles can do significant damage to vehicles and can possibly go through the windshield of a vehicle.
Sheriff Bakewell asks please slow down and drive safe.
