Kaylee Penne, daughter of Terry and Karen Penne of Belgrade, was crowned Cedar Rapids High homecoming queen following the Cedar Valley football game on September 28. Trey Mogensen, son of Keith and Sandy Mogensen of Cedar Rapids, was crowned king. Cory Scott and Jessica Kuhl were married in an outdoor ceremony on July 20, 2012, at Country Pines in Lincoln. The bride is the daughter of Suzanne Kuhl of Sioux Falls, SD, and the late Wayne Kuhl. The groom is the son of Mark and Becky Scott of Belgrade. Fact of the Week: You’re pronouncing Dr. Seuss’ name wrong. Dr. Seuss, the popular children’s book author who is known for his rhyming skills, was born with the name Theodor Seuss Geisel. Seuss is his mother’s maiden name, and their family pronounces it as “soice” (rhyming with voice).

Air National Guard Capt. John P. Glynn has received his silver wings upon graduation from pilot training. He is the son of Paul and Gloria Glynn of Palmer. The Timber Creek 4-H Club members held a trail ride on Sunday through Red Rock. Their families were all invited along with visitors Mrs. Sandy Sonderup and daughters, and Genna Frenzen of Fullerton. After the trail ride a weiner roast was held by the Cedar River near the Galen Malander farm. Peace Lutheran Church near Belgrade and St. John’s of Cedar Rapids Sunday Schools enjoyed a hay ride October 4 at Peace Lutheran Church. Horses owned by Dan and Teri Choat were used to pull the racks. A wiener roast was held after the ride. The event was attended by a hundred children and adults.

Mrs. Gerry Malander hosted the Gleaner’s Extension Club meeting October 14. Roll call was answered by each member telling a good storage tip. Mrs. Vernon Zumbrunn gave a lesson on stain removal.

Miss Mary Kay Miller recently passed the state board examination for licensing as a registered nurse. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Gervin O. Miller of Cedar Rapids.
Mrs. Donn Russell of Fullerton and the Misses Gwen Channer of Lincoln and Mary, Gail and Beverly Channer were guest singers at the regular worship services at the Fullerton Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning. They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. William Channer of Cedar Rapids.
The Farmers Wives Club met with Mrs. Virgil Pugh on October 19. Election of officers was held as follows: Mrs. Lloyd Imus, president; Mrs. George Ahlers, vice-president; and Mrs. Pugh, secretary. A craft lesson on making pillow tops was presented by the hostess.

FENTON: To Mr. and Mrs. Francis Fenton of Wolbach, a daughter, Joyce Annette, on October 12 at Memorial Hospital.
ROBINSON: To Mr. and Mrs. Harold Robinson, a daughter, on October 13 at the Boone County Hospital at Albion.
After a visit with Columbus friends last week, Mrs. Bob Dopf wrote an interesting article about her ride home on the Spalding branch line train from Columbus. At present, a caboose of World War I vintage is used for passengers traveling by train on the branch line. The Union Pacific now has no agent or station at Belgrade and the town is served by three-day-a-week rail service.
The Belgrade Firemen held their annual feed at the Village Hall on Wednesday evening. Mrs. Elvin Gress and Mrs. Ben McBride prepared the turkey dinner which was served.
Mrs. Eddie Crouse has taken employment at Clara’s Cafe in Fullerton.

The public is invited to the first annual Horse Show of the Timber Creek Trailers next Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. There is a program of 14 events which will be staged at the location of the Timber Creek Trading Post (formerly Schoening’s Store).
Stanley Armatys Jr., farmer residing northwest of Belgrade, was injured last week when his hand became caught in a corn picker while he was cleaning it out. He is being cared for at Veterans Hospital in Grand Island.
The Belgrade School is purchasing an electric basketball scoreboard through contributions.
LAMBERT: To Mr. and Mrs. William Lambert of Raymond, a daughter, Thelma Berniece, September 25. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dufoe, Mr. and Mrs. Onno Ahlers, and Mr. and Mrs. Dayle Horacek spent the weekend in Rock County doing some prairie chicken hunting.
Glen McAfee and Ed Gdowski are enjoying a deer hunting trip to Colorado this week. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Crouse are having extensive improvements and remodeling done on their farm home south of Belgrade. They have been staying at the home of their son, Eddie Crouse Jr., while the carpenters are working. Patsy Wagner spent the weekend with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cox, at Cedar Rapids.

Ira Ostrander is suffering from a knee infection resulting from running into a piece of rusty metal.
Theodore Schweitz of Omaha was a weekend guest of home folks. Dr. Richard Penry resigned his position as surgeon at the ordnance plant at Wahoo and has entered the Army as a first lieutenant. He is stationed at Camp Campbell, Ky. He recently visited his father, J. W. Penry, near Belgrade. Gasoline rationing will become nationwide on November 22 and registration for gas coupon books will start November 9. The coupons will provide for 2,880 miles of driving per year. Each car owner will be allowed but five tires. A 35-mile speed limit will be established and drivers exceeding this will have their gas rations reduced or revoked. Miss Vallie Davis, daughter of Mrs. Nellie Davis of Belgrade, and George Carrier of Alliance were married Monday, September 28, at Alliance.
