Memorial Day is More Than Just a Day Off

Memorial Day weekend is seen by some as the unofficial start of summer.

But it is more than just a three-day weekend and an excuse to fire-up the barbecue. Your ability to relax and enjoy your day came at a high cost. Memorial Day was paid for with the blood of your brothers, cousins and neighbors.

The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868. Originally called Decoration Day, it began during the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. After World War I, it came to be observed in honor of those who had died in all U.S. wars, and its name changed to Memorial Day.

“May we never forget our fallen comrades. Freedom isn’t free.”

Sgt. Major Bill Paxton

“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived.”

George S. Patton

“May we never forget our fallen comrades. Freedom isn’t free.”

Sgt. Major Bill Paxton
