City looking for properties with abandoned well

Abandoned wells pose a serious threat to groundwater quality and public safety. Unsealed or deteriorating wells can act as direct pathways for contaminants—such as fertilizers, pesticides, and bacteria — to enter the aquifer. Once in the groundwater, these pollutants can migrate with natural flow patterns and compromise drinking water supplies. In addition to water quality risks, abandoned wells also present physical hazards to people, livestock, and wildlife.

To address these concerns, the City of Fullerton has partnered with the Lower Loup Natural Resources District (LLNRD) and secured grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (DWEE). This funding supports a well decommissioning program that offers full reimbursement for the cost of properly sealing abandoned wells within the designated project area.

The deadline to sign up is Dec. 31, 2025. Protecting our water starts with sealing unused wells. To participate, contact the City of Fullerton at 308-536-2428.
