Columbus Community Hospital’s economic impact reaches beyond healthcare

COLUMBUS — Columbus Community Hospital’s impact extends far beyond patient care. A recent analysis conducted by the Heartland Health Alliance found the hospital generated nearly $386 million in economic activity, supported approximately 1,944 jobs and contributed more than $11 million in state and local taxes across Nebraska in 2026.

TheanalysisbreaksdownCCH’s economic impact through its:

• Direct impact: The direct impact CCH has on the state of Nebraska through its services, including jobs it provides, revenue it creates and taxes it generates.

• Indirect impact: The impact CCH has on jobs and wages created in other (downstream) industries that support CCH’s operations, such as contractors, linen services, hotels, etc.

• Induced impact: The impact CCH’s direct and downstream employees have on the community based on their spending at local restaurants and on entertainment, real estate and insurance, etc.

The analysis found that CCH’s direct impact included 1,026 jobs, more than $206 million in revenue and over $3.1 million in state and local taxes.

“Our mission begins with providing exceptional care, but our responsibility to the community extends well beyond the walls of the hospital,” said Michael Hansen, FACHE, the hospital’s president and chief executive officer. “By creating quality jobs, supporting local businesses and investing in the people and services that make our region stronger, CCH is helping build a healthier and more vibrant future for Columbus and the communities we serve.”

Through indirect impact, the hospital supported more than 428 jobs and generated over $84 million in economic activity among businesses that support hospital operations, including contractors, hotels and restaurants.

Induced impact, created when CCH employees and supporting industries spend money locally, resulted in 490 additional jobs, over $95 million in revenue and more than $5 million in state and local taxes.

Chad Van Cleave, vice president of financial services at the hospital, said Columbus Community Hospital is proud to be both a healthcare provider and an economic driver for the region.

“We are deeply grateful for the trust our community places in us,” he said. “That trust is earned every day by our outstanding physicians, clinicians and support staff members, who are committed to delivering some of the highest-quality care in Nebraska.”

The industries CCH has the most impact on include real estate, employment services, restaurants, management and administrative services, accounting and payroll services, and legal services. Revenue generated within these industries ranged from approximately $1.6 million to more than $16 million.
