LETTER: Former deputy treasurer responds to firing

Dear Editor,

I am writing to inform the taxpayers of Nance County about a recent action taken by a Nance County elected official. For nearly 31 years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Deputy Treasurer of Nance County. While I was not an elected official, I was appointed by the Treasurer to act as her Deputy—making decisions, signing documents and checks, and serving in her official capacity during her absence. Throughout these years, I have always strived to serve both the county and the office with friendliness, honesty, and integrity.

Recently, I have been asked by many taxpayers whether I had retired. The answer is no—I did not retire. Although I had planned to retire before the end of 2025, I was in fact terminated by the Nance County Official that appointed me. I believe this action was taken in retaliation for my participation in a recent county board meeting, where—at the suggestion of the County Attorney—I raised a question regarding a section of the personnel policy.

Rather than supporting me as her employee, the Nance County Official spoke against me at the meeting. Later, after a brief exchange of disagreement in the office, she ended the conversation by apologizing for her behavior and the way she acted and stating, “I’m sorry, I’ve always been a control freak.” Those were her words, not mine. I continued working the rest of that day and the following one without incident, but on the third day I was called to the HR office, where I was terminated in the presence of the County Attorney, the Chairman of the County Board, and HR.

It saddens me that after nearly 31 years of dedicated service—often covering the office during the Treasurer’s frequent absences—I was dismissed so abruptly and without consideration for my many years of commitment to this county.

To the taxpayers of Nance County: Thank you. It has truly been my honor to serve you as Deputy Treasurer all these years. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you, and I will always be grateful for the trust you placed in me.

Sincerely,

Janet King
