Lessons learned from Linus Van Pelt

I have mentioned before that I am a nerd. For Christmas this year my mom and dad got me a ring from Lord of the Rings that I wear around my neck. My kids joke that it is my precious. (If you read that last bit as Gollum then I think we can be friends.

No longer a planner

I used to be a planner. I would plan out vacations, schedules and all sorts of things. I also used to be organized. Before the internet, I organized my sock drawer by color. Yes, that is what we did for fun without the internet, organized the sock drawer into a rainbow.

The path of passivity leads to destruction

Nebraskans are known far and wide for their work ethic. Our state routinely has the lowest unemployment numbers in the nation and many companies seek to employ workers from here! In the Fourth of the 10 Commandments, God writes: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

Christmas memories

As I’m sitting down to write this, it’s two weeks until Christmas. Where has the year gone? Last week Rick Holtz mentioned watching Christmas movies. He didn’t mention my favorite movie, so I got excited about sharing it. I checked the archives and realized that I wrote about it last year.

The world is more dangerous today than it’s been since the height of the Cold War. The terrorist group Hamas, backed by Iran, attacked Israel in October. Russia continues its war against Ukraine, threatening order and stability in Europe.

Don’t lose track of the reason for the season

I love Christmas. I love the lights on houses. I love Christmas presents under the tree. I can’t wait to watch my kids open their presents on Christmas morning. But as much as I love the holiday season, I have to take a step back and remember the reason for the season.

A point of order

My son is a talker. I tell people he’s afraid that he will suffocate if he stops talking. But to be honest, he comes by it naturally. My dad and both his brothers are conversationalists, too. You don’t start a conversation with any of them unless you have some time, but it’s worth it.

Nebraska and the Middle East

For the past nearly two months worldwide attention has been focused on the tiny nation of Israel, but why should we in Nebraska be concerned with what is going on 6,500 miles away in the Middle East.

Christmas and sports

Christmas is around the corner. It’s now December. Do you ever think our seasons need moved a little? That equinox thing must be off, as I don’t think Dec. 20 or 22 is the first day of winter. The first day of winter should be Dec. 1, spring March 1, summer June 1, and fall Sept. 1.
