Our abysmal tax code

“The power to tax is the power to destroy,” said U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall who served from 1801 to 1835. With the state and federal government growing every year, the need for more of your money grows as well!

Learning to discern

There’s an old maxim that says “there are two sides to every story.” In fact it’s so old it can be found in the Bible, although not in so many words. Proverbs 18:17 says, “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.”

Exceptional USA

While flying for Delta we would go in and out of San Diego, CA a lot. We would land and take off to the west due to the prevailing winds, but also for noise abatement (near idle power over downtown on approach).

The value of work

Several years ago while flying at Delta I discovered the co-pilot I was flying with was a fellow farm boy, like me. Being in the cockpit with someone for 20-30 hours lends itself to a wide range of conversations.

August in Nebraska

As part of the August state work period, I’ve had the pleasure of working back home in Nebraska and traveling the state. All month, I’ve been hearing from my fellow Nebraskans about what they want to see happening in the U.S. Senate.

Summer, fairs family and the fabric of society

Few things touch the heart more than seeing a young family walking the midway at the fair and seeing young children go on their first rides at the carnival. Is there anything cuter than a child petting a calf or holding a lamb at a 4H exhibit?

Unpacking the politics of climate change

In 1975 a Newsweek magazine article sounded the alarm over what it called “The Coming Ice Age.”

Deconstructing woke, ESG and CRT

During this last legislative session the term “woke” was being bandied about the legislative floor like a birdie in a badminton game. One day a senator suddenly stood up and demanded the word not be used any longer!

What is the difference between a right and a responsibility?

A short time ago I had the privilege of reading the meanings associated with the folding of the American Flag to some elementary students at the Fullerton City Library. I was sincerely touched by their attention and reverence as the American Legion Veterans folded Old Glory.

Happy Birthday America

Happy 247th birthday America! You set another world record! No other nation in recorded history has had a single form of government for as long as ours has. Since our Constitution went into effect in 1789, France has seen 15 constitutions come and go.
