Back to the sidelines

It’s time to dust off my old press pass and start plotting my routes.Fall sports are back, and my evenings are about to get very busy.In previous years, I would spend a couple of days entering all the sports schedules into my calendar.

Hide and seek

You have not lived until you have played hide-and-seek with a toddler.Over the weekend, we had some friends over for dinner. After the meal was finished, the kids ran off to play in Timmy and Teddy’s bedroom.

Home-made prank

My house played a prank on me Friday night.Well, it wasn’t so much a prank as my doorknob breaking and my house refusing to let me leave.I had plans to go to a movie Friday night with some friends. They were picking me up at 7 p.m., giving us plenty of time to get to Grand Island for an 8 p.m.

Don’t blink

They say that every time you blink, you run the risk of missing something important happening around you.Well, I must have been blinking a lot this summer. We are in the final days of July and are about to turn the calendar to August.

Learn from your mistakes

One thing I learned a long time ago in my newspaper career is that mistakes happen. You do everything you can to avoid them, but every now and then a misspelled word, the wrong photo or a typo in a headline sneaks into print. It’s the nature of the business.

A piece of my childhood

You never know what you’ll find when you walk into a thrift store.A few weeks ago, I wandered into one for the first time and stumbled across something that instantly took me back more than 30 years.Sitting on a shelf was the exact pocket watch I had as a kid.

Presentation matters

Some people say there is no wrong way to wrap a present. I disagree.Sure, the gift itself is what matters most, but presentation counts for something too. A well-wrapped gift builds anticipation.

Fireworks, family and fun

I am a big fan of passing on traditions to my children.Growing up, we would go over to my grandparents’house to celebrate the Fourth of July.

Holtz kids playing musical beds

There is a little project happening in the Holtz house.Kimberly is rearranging kids’ bedrooms, and that has led to a game of musical beds. Much like musical chairs, you do not want to be the last kid trying to figure out where you’re supposed to sleep.

Sports memories worth passing down

I learned something new over the weekend: Old sporting events still live on YouTube.I don’t watch nearly as many sports on television as I used to.
