Reeg enters not guilty plea

COLUMBUS — A Columbus man has entered a plea of not guilty to charges related to the killing of a Fullerton woman.

Jack Reeg, 25, of Columbus, was arraigned in the district court of Platte County on Thursday. Reeg was arrested in connection to the Sept. 16 shooting death of his girlfriend, Kennedi DeMuth, 25, of Fullerton. He is charged with second degree murder, terroristic threats and two counts of use of a firearm to commit a felony.

Appearing Thursday before Judge Jason S. Doele, Reeg entered a plea of not guilty to all four counts. A pretrial hearing was set for Jan. 26, 2026, at 9 a.m. A jury trial is scheduled to begin on Feb. 2, 2026, at 9 a.m.

Last month, Judge Denise J. Kracl set bond at $750,000. As a condition of his release, Reeg is not to consume or possess alcohol and controlled substances and cannot have any contact with DeMuth’s family. He also is not allowed to leave Platte County.

According to court documents, Reeg told police that he and DeMuth had been fighting for several months. He told Interim Police Chief Bret Strecker that on one occasion, the couple had been driving from Fullerton to Columbus, and they started fighting. Reeg claimed DeMuth started hitting him, so he reached over and grabbed her by the neck. He said that he choked her until she passed out and then he drove the rest of the way to Columbus. He told police that he woke her up in Columbus.

Reeg told police that he and DeMuth went out on Sept. 16 for drinks and food. When they returned to his home in the 2200 block of 7th Street, they began fighting again.

Reeg claimed he caught DeMuth in a lie and it made him angry. He went to his closet and pulled out a .22 rifle. According to court documents, Reeg pointed the rifle and DeMuth and threatened her with it.

Reeg told police that DeMuth said she was going to get a protection order against him. He said that hearing this made him even more angry.

Reeg told police that he had unloaded the gun prior to the fight and did not think there was a round in the chamber. He said that he pulled the trigger to try to scare her.
