PERU — High school students across the region have an opportunity to get a jump start on their college education through PERU FIRST, Peru State College's dual enrollment and early entry program that allows students to earn college credit before graduating from high school.
The program is designed for motivated juniors and seniors who are ready for college-level coursework and want to begin working toward a degree while still completing their high school education. Eligible students can enroll in college courses for just $60 per credit hour — less than one-third of the regular cost of tuition — and classes are available online, making it easier to fit college coursework into busy high school schedules.
"PERU FIRST gives students the opportunity to challenge themselves academically while saving both time and money on their college education," said Susan Hogg, VP for Enrollment Management. "Whether students plan to attend Peru State College or another institution after graduation, earning college credit early can provide a significant advantage."
PERU FIRST combines both dual enrollment and early entry opportunities into one streamlined program. Students who qualify can earn transferable college credits while remaining enrolled in high school, and many courses may also satisfy high school graduation requirements, depending on their school district's policies. Because the courses are taught at the college level, the grades students earn become part of their official college transcript.
Beyond the financial savings, the program helps students experience the expectations of college coursework while receiving support from both their high school and Peru State College. The experience can ease the transition to college and build confidence before students begin pursuing a degree full-time.
Students interested in participating must meet the program's admission requirements, including being a high school junior or senior, receiving permission from a parent or guardian, obtaining a recommendation from their high school, and meeting academic eligibility standards.
