The Boone-Nance Genealogical Society met at Good Samaritan Estates in Albion. A report was given about the extra research which has been done at Oxford Cemetery. This site is also known as Loretto Pioneer Cemetery, located about two miles north of Loretto on Highway 14. The dates on the headstones range from 1873 to 1912. The centennial committee of Loretto chose to restore that cemetery as their centennial project in 1972 and named it Loretto Pioneer Cemetery at that time. At that time they knew of about 20 burials, but because of research by the Boone-Nance Genealogical Society, members have now located more than 80 burial sites. Fact of the Week: Research conducted at the University of Vienna suggests that yawning may play an essential role in cooling our brains. But yawning to cool the brain is “not functional” when the outside temperature is as hot as the body. Sleep deprivation does increase brain temperature, which could be a factor in why we yawn more when we’re tired.

The Belgrade feature in the Nance County Journal was titled, “Fur cape donated to museum stirs Belgrade memories.” The Nance County Historical Society received a $100 donation from Jeff Williams of Highland, California. The fur cape is a donation courtesy of the James V. Williams family, also of Highland. The cape was worn by Anna Jane Main Orr. Anna, with her husband, John Orr, farmed across the road from the Sam Vosburg farm and Simon C. Robinson farm in Belgrade. (Now the Williams farm, great-grandson of Anna Jane.) The article in the Journal featured the details of the Orr and Robinson families. Meet A Belgrade Scholar: Eighth Grader Seth Swerczek. His favorite history study is “Nat Turner because he was a smart and rebellious slave that led a slave rebellion in Virginia.” The class he likes best is “science.” Words to Ponder: “Everyone has inside them a piece of good news. The good news is you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is.” – Anne Frank

The building was erected by Irwin and Osterholt. Cy Greek, farmer living southwest of Belgrade, received severe bruises and was badly shaken up when he became caught in a farm loader. Two pairs of overalls were torn from his body Wayne, two, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Carlson, narrowly escaped drowning Friday when he fell into a cistern as he was playing with Bruce Staashelm, four, at the Pauley farm in the Pinnacle Hill vicinity where they had accompanied their mothers to a party. After Bruce told the women that Wayne had fallen into a tank, they saw him floating in the cistern. Mrs. Albert Staashelm slid into the cistern where the water was more than waist deep as she lifted the child up. The women held Mrs. Dale Smith by the feet as she leaped into the cistern to get the boy from Mrs. Staashelm. Wayne regained consciousness after being given artificial respiration. He was then taken to a doctor. Bert Dufoe and Jack Dufoe and Terry spent Tuesday at the Bill Sheets ranch at Burwell duck hunting.
