Seniors listed on the Cedar Rapids High School all “A” Honor Roll are Trent Braun and Trey Mogensen. Seniors on the Excellence Honor Roll are Evey Choat and Kaylee Penne.

Fact of the Week: Inventor Richard James, a naval engineer, was trying to create a spring that could help stabilize equipment on boats in choppy waters. However, his spring’s ability to move seemingly on its own proved more interesting and became the prototype for the Slinky in 1943.

Meet A Belgrade Scholar: Eighth Grader Nathan Hoffman. His favorite class is “P.E.,” and his favorite history study is “Abraham Lincoln because he stopped slavery.” His hero is “Chris Hoffman because he is a sergeant in the Army.”

Jossy Newquist, a junior at Aurora High School, was a member of the Aurora Girls Cross Country Team which placed first for the Class B Division of the State Cross County Invite October 5 at Kearney.

November 4, 1991

Ruth Gress, Helen Johnston, Mimi Hoffman, and Chloa McBride were Sunday afternoon guests in the Inez Bourn home and the afternoon was spent playing cards.

On October 29, the Belgrade K-3 had a Halloween party. Parents and siblings were invited to join the students and were entertained with songs and a skit.

November 3, 1982

E. R. (Gene) Scott of Denver, Colorado, has accepted a position with Commonwealth Electric Company as vice-president of the company’s newly formed special products division at Aurora, Colorado. He is a son of former Belgrade residents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Scott of Fullerton.

November 9, 1972

Halloween was a very quiet night in Belgrade with no serious damage being done. A few barrels and signs were placed on main street, but no vandalism was done. Children were out for their “trick or treats.” Each young person who visited the homes was courteous and remembered to say “Thank You.”

Hunters reported good success hunting pheasants over the weekend. Donald Hellbusch and several friends from Omaha spent the weekend with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hellbusch, and hunted pheasants in the area.

Mrs. Nellie Crouse was honored by her card club with a party for her birthday the afternoon of November 1. Lunch was served by Mrs. Alfred Hellbusch and Mrs. Emil Zabka.

The weather situation is beginning to get critical for farmers with much milo to be harvested and corn to be picked. Warm and dry weather is badly needed.

OLTMANNS: To Mr. and Mrs. Larry Oltmanns of Norfolk, a son, on October 24. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Walter Oltmanns.

RATHMAN: To Mr. and Mrs. Max Rathman of Cozad, a daughter, on October 23. Greatgrandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ellison.

WINCH: To Mr. and Mrs. James Winch, a daughter, Rabyn Annette, at Boone County Hospital at Albion on October 23.

Mrs. Albert Luedtke received a severe cut on her finger Saturday when a kitchen knife she was using slipped. Several stitches were required to close the cut.

Delmar Plumbtree and Bill Johnston are combining milo near Clay Center this week.

Following baptismal services at the Methodist Church on Sunday for their son, Marlin Jay, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Scott were hosts at a family dinner at Clara’s Cafe at Fullerton.

October 30, 1952

WAGNER: To Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Wagner of Belgrade, a daughter, Thursday, October 3, at Memorial Hospital.

On Wednesday, the afternoon train set a fire to grass near the railroad tracks north of the depot. The fire spread rapidly east towards two corn fields before firemen from Belgrade and Cedar Rapids extinguished it.

PLUMBTREE: To Mr. and Mrs. Ed Plumbtree of Nashville, Tenn., a daughter, Saturday, October 25. Mr. Plumbtree is serving in the Army. Mrs. Plumbtree is the former Shirley Newquist.

Belgrade School juniors have ordered class rings and are selecting the class play.

Committee for the November issue of the Red Bird at Belgrade School are Marilyn Channer, Kenneth Eddy, Phyllis Imus, and Jerry McIntyre.

Sharon Stevens, 12, received a fractured hip on Saturday when she fell under a corn elevator.

The four girls who recently went to Denver all have employment. They are Mary Cornwell, employed with a sewing machine agency; Viola Nichols, bookkeeper; Pauline Ostrander, typist; and Berniece Twiestmeyer, receptionist for a music company.

October 29, 1942

Belgrade School was dismissed last Friday for one week to allow students to husk corn and the teachers to attend state institute.

The former Farmers Cooperative Elevator at Belgrade has been sold to John Thomas formerly of Fullerton, for $2,000.

Honoring the birthday of John Nelson, a group of friends surprised him at his home Friday evening. The evening was spent in playing pinochle.
