Marooned without a Compass
“For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our guide even unto death.” (Psalm 48:14) One summer a long time ago—before cell phones and GPS and cars with built in compasses— my parents and I decided to attend the Iowa state fair. We were caught up with farm tasks for the time being. We had never been there before. So off we went. The trip kitty corner across the Hawkeye state proceeded relatively glitch free until we three country mice reached the city limits of Des Moines. For some reason, each of us lost our sense of direction. What felt to one of us like we were headed south, seemed to another like we were traveling east, and to yet another, north! We certainly could have benefited from a compass just then. I got to thinking about that incident a few days ago when I saw that next Sunday (November 6) is Marooned without a Compass Day. It seems to me there is a bit of irony for such a day to be so close to Election Day. I believe that too many of us in America have been meandering through policies and proposals without a compass to point the way. Many in our nation no longer are following the moral compass on which our nation was founded— the Word of God. Instead, we have to often succumbed to the emotions and demands of our culture, and believed the lie that truth is relative. We often fail to follow God’s perfect will and plan regarding marriage, gender, children, how we treat others, how we manage our money and time, etc. It is as if we have become marooned without a compass.
The Welsh minister Martyn Lloyd-Jones penned these words.
“We must come back to the soul and to God who made it. We were made for Him, we are meant for Him, we have a correspondence with Him, and we will never come to rest until, like that needle on the compass, we strike that northern point, and there we come to rest – nowhere else.”
May these words written by hymn writer Doris Akers also be our prayer.
”Lead me, guide me along the way; For if You lead me, I cannot stray; Lord, let me walk each day with Thee.
Lead me, O Lord, lead me.” Giving credit where credit is due: biblegateway.com gracequotes.org hymnary.org Note: Caroline is a freelance writer from southeast Nebraska. She loves to hear from her readers. You can contact her gracenotes2you@ gmail.com or at P.O. Box 666; Humboldt, NE 68376.
