The Nance County Journal feature was titled “Peace in the Valley,” featuring the 94 years the Peace Lutheran Church at Timber Creek has been in existence, but is currently struggling to keep the sanctuary alive with a handful of parishioners. Werner Hellbusch, 98, of Belgrade remembers he “was about four years old when the church was built and I climbed on every rafter there was, so I knew the place well.” Meet A Belgrade Scholar: Third Grader Nicholas Hoffman. His favorite history study is “George Washington because he was brave,” and if he were mayor of Belgrade, he would “buy a swimming pool.” Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hellbusch of Belgrade entertained at a noon dinner on November 2 to honor the second birthday November 3 of their grandson, Ryan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hellbusch of Grand Island, Funny Words of Wisdom – “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” – Mark Twain

Winners of the Belgrade Fire Department raffle were Jack Tomlinson, a $100 bond, and Sue Arends of Albion, an afghan donated by Roseanna Christensen. A donation of $100 from Jasper and Pat Cornwell will be used to purchase new equipment. Bill Channer and Mary Channer-Paul went to Mankato, Kansas, over the weekend where Mary called square dancing for the Wagon Wheelers Square Dance Club. This is the eighth year that the melodrama has been staged in Cedar Rapids. It has over the years continued to be a popular community event. It is sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Community Club. All the cast are volunteers. Mary Lee Robinson was cast as the heroine in this year’s play, “Fast Train to the Poorhouse.”

Early Monday the weather was anything but good. Rain fell most of the night and turned to snow shortly before daybreak. Temperatures were in the 20s. Roads were hazardous and classes were dismissed at the Belgrade School. Winter has arrived!
A Harvest Festival will be held at the United Methodist Church the evening of November 16. Thanksgiving Service, with special music, will be held November 19.
The Neighborhood Card Club met with Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Cantral on Saturday evening.
Theodore Forest “Frosty” Hack, 74, longtime resident in Belgrade, died November 8 in Grand Island at the Veterans Hospital. He spent most of his early life working on farms in the area and later was a truck driver.

Card!
Two Belgrade hunters who bagged trophy animals the early part of the week are James Shoemaker with an 18-point white tail deer, and Arlan Ahlers, who shot a 4 1/2 year old mule deer on Saturday. Ahler’s animal had the largest spread in its antlers of any of the deer checked in locally and hog dressed at about 200 pounds. Shoemaker’s deer was about 5 1/2 years old, and the estimated hog dress weight was 250 pounds.
The Weekly Recipe was “Apple Pudding” by Mrs. George McBride.
The following students are listed on the Belgrade High School Honor Roll for the first six weeks of this school year. Seniors: Gordon Starr, Fred Bishop, Tony Hellbusch. Juniors: Bill Glenn, Shirley Dufoe. Sophomores: Richard Ahlers, Fairy Bishop, Charles McBride, Wilma Rasmussen. Freshmen: Mike McGinness, Judy Ostrander.
Mrs. Kurt Liesch has returned from Germany where she had spent the past two months visiting relatives.

November 6, 1952
John Bussell, farmer living near Belgrade, sustained a spinal injury Saturday when he was struck by an ear of corn. He is receiving care at Memorial Hospital, where he has been placed in a cast.
On Friday afternoon a grass fire along the railroad track near the Mrs. Ruth Adams farm was extinguished. A cake baking contest and basketball game will be held for the Auditorium Benefit, the proceeds of which will be used to buy athletic equipment for Belgrade’s new auditorium. McKeeman: To Mr. and Mrs. Benny McKeeman, a daughter, born October 31 at a Scottsbluff hospital. The Belgrade School grammar pupils, accompanied by their teachers, went to Genoa Monday to see a picture show. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hellbusch of Craig have purchased a farm at Ottertail, Minn., and will move there in the spring.

JOHNSTON: To Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Johnston, a 9 3-4 pound son, Sunday, October 31. Dale Smith of Belgrade has enlisted in the Air Force. Roy Irwin of Peoria, Ill., formerly of Belgrade, has been inducted into the Army and is stationed at Scott Field, Ill. Jesse Bishop, who is serving in the infantry and is stationed at Fort Brady, Mich., has been promoted from private to private first class.
With 112 families in Nance County signing Victory Garden pledges last spring, records at the office of the county agent show that 14,126 quarts of vegetables and 11,976 quarts of fruit were canned under this program, an average per family of 232 quarts. In addition, thousands of pounds were used fresh from the gardens and equally large quantities have been stored or dried for winter use or froze in freezer lockers. Mrs. Henry Brockman, living north of Fullerton, in addition to supplying the table with fresh vegetables during the summer for a family of eight, canned 504 quarts of vegetables, dried 40 pounds and stored 70 pounds, not including a good crop of potatoes.
