The Centers for Medicare and Medical Services (CMS) reports a set of quality ratings for each nursing home that participates in Medicare or Medicaid. Their ratings take the form of several “star” ratings for each nursing home. The primary goal of this rating system is to provide resi-dents and their families with an easy way to understand assessment of nursing home quality, making meaningful distinctions between high and low performing nursing homes.
The five star quality rating system offers valuable and comprehensible information to consumers based on the best data available. It features an Overall Quality Rating of one to five stars based on nursing home performance on three domains, each of which has its own rating: Health Inspections measures base don outcomes from state health inspections “ Staffing - measures base don nursing home staffing levels and staff turnover : Quality Measures - measures base don MDS and claims-based quality measures.
