Unidentified remains discovered near Genoa tree dump

Sheriff: We are treating this as a homicide

GENOA — The Nance County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska State Patrol are investigating after human remains were discovered near the Genoa City tree dump on Friday.

Deputies responded and found severely decomposed human remains in the area. After initial investigation, foul play was suspected, so the Nebraska State Patrol were contacted for assistance in the recovery of the remains and investigation of the incident.

The scene was secured overnight and NSP investigators recovered the remains of an unidentified individual. The cause of death is not known.

"Due to the advanced decomposition of the body, we are not able to provide a description of the deceased at this time," Nance County Sheriff Ben Bakewell said in a statement.

Police are treating this as a homicide. The incident is still under investigation.
