As Another School Year Begins

(A Prayer)

As another school year begins, Lord, we thank you…

We thank you for the places in our communities where learning occurs…. the large brick structures dominating a small town’s landscape, the homeschool mom’s kitchen table, the basketball court, the piano teacher’s studio, and the church youth group room.

We thank you for all who work hard keep the buildings and school grounds safe and clean and in good working order. Grant them strength and stamina and wisdom for each task they are required to do. Give them a servant heart and patience and compassion for all who cross their path…. the frightened kindergartener, the overwhelmed high school student, a new coworker, and a frustrated teacher.

We thank you for those who see that the youth of our community get to and from school safely each day…. bus drivers, parents, daycare providers, and older kids who walk with their younger siblings and friends. Give them renewed patience and alertness each day.

We thank you for those whom you have called to leadership positions in our area schools… administrators, school board members, teachers, and parents. May they lead with honesty and integrity. Give them patience and wisdom and clarity as they encounter challenging situations. May their decisions honor you.

We thank you for those whose tasks occur more often behind the scenes than in the limelight…. Cooks, nurses, paraprofessionals, accountants, and school counselors. Give each of them what they need in order to meet the needs of our students.

We thank you for our students. Your Word reminds us that each of us is “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Thank you for the uniqueness of each student. Thank you for the strengths and abilities each one brings to the classroom. Give them patience with themselves and others when they encounter difficult tasks.
