LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services’ (DHHS) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was commended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Administration (FNA) after recording a 5.9% payment error rate for the 2025 federal fiscal year.
“This low payment error rate represents our teams’ diligence and commitment to accuracy in determining case eligibility and benefits,” said Barbara Lacina, Director of the Office of Economic Assistance (OEA). “DHHS is proud of our team and their continued dedication to maintaining integrity within the program while ensuring Nebraskans receive the support they need”.
Nebraska is just one of ten states to record a payment error rate below 6%. This is a significant accomplishment, as the national average is currently 10.62%, and new federal quality control requirements now hold states liable for payment error rates exceeding a 6% national performance measure.
In a letter written to DHHS CEO Steve Corsi, FNA Acting Administrator Shiela Corley commended Nebraska for its payment error rate and encouraged the state to be vigilant in its continued focus on payment accuracy.
“We appreciate your continued efforts in providing the requested data and look forward to continuing to assist Nebraska in identifying, addressing, and preventing SNAP integrity issues,” Corley wrote. “Nebraska’s proper administration of SNAP is essential to ensuring the Program operates efficiently, effectively, and with integrity and accountability.”
