Shirley Jean (Gabbert) Shotkoski

Shirley Jean (Gabbert) Shotkoski, 87, of Plattsmouth, peacefully passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

Shirley was born on Jan. 8, 1936 to Clarence “Tom” Thomas Gabbert and Theda Evelyn (Summers) Gabbert in Kansas City, Mo., in 1937. She moved with her family to their family home in rural Pleasant Valley, Mo. Shirley started attending country school when she was four years old and she graduated from country school in 1949. Then she attended and graduated from Liberty High School in Liberty, Mo., with the class of 1953. She started working for the U.S. Government in 1955 and ending her career retiring from the VA Hospital in Omaha in 1979. Shirley spent most of her career working for the Department of Defense, which she enjoyed.

She had three sons from her first marriage, Tom, Brian, and Bill Bumgarner. Later Shirley met the love of her life, Lucian “Lou” Michael Shotkoski, in California on a government project. Shirley and Lou married on Nov. 10, 1966 in Barstow, Calif. Shirley loved her family and friends and she enjoyed making candy at Christmas time for gifts.

Shirley is survived by her two grandchildren, Sean and Kris Flynn both of Jemez Springs, N.M.; her great granddaughter, Amber Flynn; her brother, J.W. Odom and his wife Helen of Liberty, Mo.; her sister: Carol Johnson of Liberty, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Theda Gabbert; her husband: Lou Shotkoski; her three sons, Bill Bumgarner, Tom Bumgarner, and Brian Bumgarner; her three brothers, Jim Gabbert, Dean Gabbert and Dick Gabbert; and her uncle, Byron “Barney” P. Summers.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, July 23, 2023 at Church of the Holy Spirit in Plattsmouth.

A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, July 23, 2023 at Church of the Holy Spirit in Plattsmouth.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., on Monday, July 24, 2023 at the Church of the Holy Spirit with Father Sean Timmerman officiating, Terry Little as vocalist, and Laurie Hajek-Jones as organist.

Her Final Resting Place will be at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha.

The family suggests Memorials to any Church of the Holy Spirit Charity or a Military Charity of Donor’s Choice.
