LETTER: Students deserve respect

I read with some interest Senator Lippincott’s column entitled “Going to school on property tax relief in Nebraska” In his column he notes the rising number of school staff and the rising number of special needs students. He states that when he has asked educators about the rise in special needs students, he has never received a clear answer except that it seems to have multiple causes on multiple fronts. He then states “The obvious influences of social media, poor diet, lack of exercise and the family breakdown have had a negative impact on our youth and overall society” If the Senator is suggesting that special needs students are the result of social media, poor diet, lack of exercise and the family breakdown, I would suggest that such a statement is simplistic and offensive to the many students and families who have special needs children. Earlier identification and reduced stigma of disabilities have led to more students receiving the support they need. Providing appropriate services to all students should be celebrated, not be tossed into a political discussion on property taxes or a discourse on society in general. All students deserve our respect and support. Be Kind.
