State of the Union was more of a campaign speech

Last week, President Joe Biden went to Congress and delivered his State of the Union speech. Well, at least that was what was supposed to happen. At some point in the two mile drive from the White House and the Capitol, some plucky campaign worker must have switched the speech.

Kiss me, I’m 10% Irish

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day when we celebrate our Irish. I do have Irish ancestors on my mother’s side. According to my DNA, I am about 10% Irish from the Munster region. According to my husband, Catholics wear green for St. Patrick’s Day and Protestants wear orange.

Fairness for our Railroaders

Everyone hears about the controversial fights in Washington, but they don’t always know the untold stories of true legislating. Practical answers to real problems don’t make headlines, but those solutions make a difference in Americans’ lives.

I was taught a harsh lesson by a six-year-old this weekend. Charlie was helping clean up after lunch on Sunday. I made a feast fit for a royal family (OK, really it was nuggets, fish sticks and french fries. But my kids loved it).

With a bill to eliminate Nebraska’s Inheritance Tax (sometimes referred to as the “Death Tax”) currently moving through the legislature, this is a good time to take a close look at this tax that has been impacting our state’s families for more than 120 years.
Can we keep the republic?

Can we keep the republic?

Can we keep the republic?

When asked what form of government we had with the new Constitution of the United States, Benjamin Franklin famously responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.” Last Friday, in my opinion, we took a big step backward from keeping it.
