My family has a fondness for crime dramas and thrillers. It isn’t uncommon to watch a scene in which a peacefully sleeping individual wakes when a shadowy figure approaches their bedside with a pillow.

Birthday celebrations and snow days

Today is my 41st birthday. My kids are more excited about it than I am. For me, it is just another Wednesday. I go to work and I spend most of my day in the office working on newspaper stuff. But to my kids a birthday means cake and ice cream. It means birthday dinners and presents.

Tackling tenure in higher education

While I was a pilot at Delta Air Lines, every nine months every pilot would have to return to Atlanta for two days of intense simulator training. We would spend six hours each day in a full motion simulator with a 180-degree 3D visual.

Snow memories

As we just got about a foot of snow, this reminds me of memories of snow. When I was a freshman in college, Halloween was cancelled due to snow. When I was teaching school, I got two days off in April (around the 10th) due to snow.

I’m sitting down to write on Monday evening. We got a lot of snow today with more expected overnight. School has already been cancelled for tomorrow for most of our schools. Of course, this will all be in the past now that you’re reading it. Will we remember the snow of 2024 many years from now?

The hole keeps getting deeper. Remember when I suggested someone should give the governor a shovel so he could dig a deeper hole for himself? That was when he had refused to read a published report on high levels of nitrates on his pig farms because it was written by “someone from Communist China.

Benefits of Pasteurization

My father-in-law is a farmer. He grew up on the family farm in southwest Minnesota, where his dad grew up, too. Blessed by fertile soil, the farm has provided for the family for several generations.

You can’t negotiate with terrorists or a tired toddler

We have all heard that you cannot negotiate with terrorists, but add tired toddlers to that list. Timmy is my two-year-old. He is all boy.

More guns in schools, pool for legislative clerks and more

They’re back. The 108th Legislature, Second Session, convenes today. One can expect proposed bills and discussion of some hot button issues as well as what could be a protracted debate on rules. It’s likely that state Sen. Tom Brewer of Gordon will have something to say about guns in schools.

Ready for new year

Greetings everyone! I hope your 2024 is off to a good start. I am writing this on the last day of 2023. It was a pretty good year. Many memories were made, and many things learned.
