Open borders and our changing culture

America is often called a “nation of immigrants” and with good reason. The ancestors of the vast majority of the nation’s citizens came here from somewhere else. Those immigrants came bringing their own national traditions and cultural heritage, but for most of its history the U.S.

Finding truth in T-shirts

This weekend I wore my Purdue shirt on Saturday. I grew up in Indiana and even went to Purdue for a little over a year before transferring. My youngest sister, Kimberly, was a toddler at the time, probably not a lot older than her youngest child’s age is now.

Thanks & More

The family of Norma Schweitz wishes to thank all who expressed their sympathy at the passing of our mother, grandmother, and friend. Your kind words at visitation and the funeral, via Facebook, too - together with cards, flowers, food and memorials were all sincerely appreciated.

Halloween memories & more

Halloween is around the corner. It’s not my favorite holiday. I like candy, but don’t like being scared. I don’t watch scary movies, or read scary books. Mysteries is as close as I get, like “Murder, She Wrote” but it’s not really that scary.

Truth matters

A few weeks ago I was researching for my column and saw a statement at the bottom of a news article. The news agency wanted to make it clear that there was no “moral equivalence” between their positions and those they disagree with. They wanted everyone to know that they held the moral high ground.

Runners (and their fans) are a different breed

Runners are a different breed. Last week I was able to check off the state cross country championships off my list of big events I have had the privilege of covering.

Promoting American interests

The heinous attack on Israel by Hamas this month sent shockwaves throughout the Middle East and across the world. War in one part of the world has a ripple effect — we all feel its impact. In this case, the United States is especially affected.

Get your eyes checked!

If you ever played baseball, you may have been told to “keep your eye on the ball.” When batting, a baseball player is taught to watch the ball the entire time from when it leaves the pitcher’s hand to when, hopefully, their bat smacks the ball for a hit.

A time for war and a time for peace

Peace reigned during my years in the U.S. Air Force, however, I did witness the kind of carnage that can be caused by combat aircraft. While stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, our family attended Europe’s biggest air show at our base.

Time to focus on some real Nebraska issues

There are plenty of distractions. Ukraine vs Russia, Israel vs the Palestinians, Republicans vs Other Republicans. The list is endless. But let’s turn our attention to a couple of Nebraska issues about which we can possibly do something.
