Charlie: Dad, I can’t wait for vacation . . .

Sometimes I am left shaking my head after talking to my kids. Now I understand why that show “Kids Say the Darndest Things” was so popular. This was a real conversation with Charlie over the weekend. Charlie: I can’t wait for vacation.

Free speech matters

This week is Free Speech Week. I received an email encouraging people like me to talk about “the importance of freedom of speech and a free press in our democracy.” I can’t do that. Don’t get me wrong, I embrace freedom of speech and a free press. I regularly speak of their importance.

Time to dust off the old Presidential Bingo Card

I don’t know about you, but I love politics. And I hate it. I love it for its entertainment value. But I hate what it turns people into. Gone are the days of old when two people could have a differing political opinion and they could still get along. Gone are the days of Election Day coverage.

The evolution of robotics

The field of robotics has come a long way in my lifetime. My earliest impressions on robotics came from movies and television. Some robots were a bit silly, like the robot from “Lost in Space.” Some were scary, like the HAL 9000 from “2001: A Space Odyssey” and later “The Terminator” robots.

Our abysmal tax code — Part 2

“Nothing is certain except death and taxes,” observed Benjamin Franklin. Since he penned that proverb in 1789 taxes have taken many new forms with deadly consequences for our economy. Last week, with acknowledgements to Daniel J.

Why I love fall

There are so many things I love about fall: the cooler temperatures, volleyball and football season, the colors of the leaves when they change and some important holidays. No, I don’t mean Halloween. I love any excuse to eat candy, but I’m not a fan of scary things.

The days dwindle down to a precious few

“For it’s a long, long while from May to December But the days grow short when you reach September And the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame…” -- September Song I decided it was time to get out of the office and go see Nebraska. It’s been a post-pandemic while since I have done so.

‘Getting under your skin’ with Varicose Veins

From the back of our hands to the back of our legs, pale blue blood vessels are visible just under the skin. Oftentimes these veins are flat and not painful. However when these vessels become abnormally swollen or dilated, they are called varicose veins.
