Monday morning quarterback: The voters got it wrong

You got it wrong. Last week voters had a chance to give the students in the Twin River school district a facility they can be proud of. Instead, 659 people said no. So now the district is stuck. They are forced to put more bandaids on a 1929 building that is falling apart. And why?

It’s Constitution Week

Happy Constitution Week everyone! The U.S. Constitution is an amazing document. It is the blueprint for our Federal Government. The founders recognized that people are born with natural rights that could not be separated from them without serious negative consequences.

The power of mentoring and accountability

Each of us has a select few people in our life who have truly helped shape who we are today. Our parents certainly exert a great influence over what kind of adults we ultimately become, but the impact of mentors outside the family sphere cannot be understated.

My heart broke this week

My heart broke this last week, and it nearly made me cry. It happened when my daughter had an assignment to write about her hero. She picked me and basically said I work all the time at the paper and have no free time. I think that’s her way of saying she misses me or misses spending time with me.

Dear Colorado, What is hatred anyway?

An open letter to Colorado. It’s fitting that I am writing this on the 22nd Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America, the day that hatred manifested itself openly on American soil.

Breast cancer can affect anyone

My mother had 6 siblings, 16 aunts and uncles, and innumerable cousins. She was the first of them all to be diagnosed with breast cancer. I think of my mom every time one of my patients tells me they aren’t concerned about breast cancer because it doesn’t run in their family.

Memories of a past life

They say that kids say the darnedest things, but they also ask some of the most interesting questions. Over the weekend we were driving to Penny’s first volleyball match. When we load the entire Holtz crew in the van, normally we will play some sort of a road game.

My husband wrote about his area of expertise, so maybe I should write about mine. Have you ever heard that one of your ancestors married an Indian princess? Or that three brothers came over from the “old country?” Or that the name was changed at Ellis Island? Or your ancestry is all online?

The cost of addiction

Early this month a longtime friend of mine was to celebrate her 70th birthday so I reached out with a text greeting. When there was no reply, I Googled her name. Sadly, I found it with her obituary published in a newspaper in another state.

Keep it secret; keep it safe

At the beginning of the Lord of the Rings movies, Gandalf tells Frodo to “keep it secret, keep it safe,” referring to the Ring of Power. A lot of times, we think that’s all we need to do with our passwords, but unfortunately, it’s not. How many passwords do you have? That’s not the right question.
