Celebrating the past

This weekend was my church’s 150th anniversary. Two former pastors came back and shared memories. It was a time of reflecting on memories. There were many photos from the past, of former pastors and buildings. It was much like a class reunion. I haven’t been to my last few class reunions.

What is the difference between a right and a responsibility?

A short time ago I had the privilege of reading the meanings associated with the folding of the American Flag to some elementary students at the Fullerton City Library. I was sincerely touched by their attention and reverence as the American Legion Veterans folded Old Glory.

Summer softball teaches plenty of lessons

Growing up my family lived at the softball field over the summer. My sister was an all-star in our local league and my dad coached.

It’s important to communicate expectations

Expectations are funny things. Sometimes they are really good, and sometimes they are really bad. I guess they’re like many things in life. We asked the kids to make supper together over the weekend. One of them said they shouldn’t do it together because they will fight.

Ice cream & 4-H time

The third Sunday of July is annually National Ice Cream Day. One of the churches in our other county has an ice cream social every year on this day. Do you think they know this? I don’t know. If you need an excuse, this Sunday is a good time to eat ice cream.

Paging Doctor Hollywood

From Dr. Marcus Welby and Dr. Meredith Grey to “Hawkeye” Pierce and Doogie Howser, MD, there have been a multitude of television doctors. You likely spend more time watching them than you do with your own physician.

Dog Days of Summer are finally here

The Dog Days of Summer are upon us. It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating Christmas, New Years and my birthday (Jan. 10 for anyone needs another holiday to celebrate). And now we have the Fourth of July in our rearview mirror. Another year is slipping away.

Alan’s Anecdotes

My parents taught their three sons to treat women with kindness and respect. Things like never hitting girls, opening doors for them and allowing them to go first. Dad called it “chivalry.” You’ll still catch me saying “ladies first” when we eat buffet style at home.

Beth’s Bits

Is July the busiest month? Seriously just when I think we don’t have much going on, then everything gets planned then. I do not have an open weekend in July. There’s the county fair, and July is always the best time for company to come or us to go east.
