The past week was a busy week. I went to a dinner for a close friend’s church celebrating its founding twenty years ago and its ongoing ministry. I also celebrated two birthdays (including my own) and went to parent teacher conferences. On Monday I went to my very first political meeting.

Governor hires consultant to save money

Governor Jim Pillen had an epiphany that paying a consultant $10 million over the next four years would save the state money. Pillen has signed the $2.5 million/year contract, renewable three times, with Epiphany Associates of Utah to find ways to save the state money.

New cooking column feature coming to the NCJ

The Nance County Journal is going to be launching a new feature. Nancy Swanson Sizemore grew up in Nance County on a farm between Fullerton and Belgrade. She graduated from Fullerton High School and has since moved to Gulf Shores, Ala. She has had recipes published in Alabama Living magazine.

Rain, homework & being local

Someone must have been praying for rain last week, because Rick and I stood outside Friday night at different football games in the rain. After one quarter, I headed for the “press box” or more likely called the “announcer’s box” to dry off. It’s difficult to take stats and notes in the rain.

Nothing ruins a public hearing on a legislative bill like the public showing up. Wait, what? A former boss said it years ago at the end of a particularly long day of hearings at the State Capitol. At the time, I agreed. I still feel that way at times.

Monday morning quarterback: The voters got it wrong

You got it wrong. Last week voters had a chance to give the students in the Twin River school district a facility they can be proud of. Instead, 659 people said no. So now the district is stuck. They are forced to put more bandaids on a 1929 building that is falling apart. And why?
