I enjoy the town festivals in Nebraska. The Swedish Festival in Stromsburg has meant more to me each year because my love for the community has grown along with the people being honored and celebrated. I noticed something after the parade that I’m sure is not unique to Stromsburg.

My aunt turns 80 this week, so we are going down to celebrate with her. I can’t remember the last time I saw my aunt. She doesn’t go to funerals, weddings or graduations. She is mentally handicapped. I have known this my entire life. If you speak to her, you know.

Celebrate the father in your life this weekend

This Sunday is Father’s Day. It’s a day to celebrate fathers, father figures, and fatherhood in general. Why celebrate Father’s Day? Because fathers are important. The people and things in life that can bring us the most joy can also bring us the most pain. A good father can be a great blessing.

We just finished the first session of the two year 108th Legislature and my first year as the senator from District 34. With 2023 being an odd numbered year, lawmakers had 90 legislative workdays. Next year the session will be just 60 days long.

“Let your fiction grow out of the land beneath your feet,” Willa Cather once wrote. The famed literary artist first came to Nebraska at the age of nine, when her family settled in Webster County. Years later, she reflected on what it was like to first step foot in our great state.

The nonpartisan unicameral legislature is broken

The 108th Legislature First Session was a hot mess. The fact that three senators could derail the work of 46 others in the nation’s only one-house, allegedly nonpartisan Legislature, speaks volumes. What went wrong? Most everything that could.
