The gift of time

One week before Father’s Day my daughter asked me what I wanted as a gift for the holiday. There was a commercial on TV about giving dads something other than a necktie, but I can’t remember what the commercial was trying to sell. I thought about it for a moment. I have everything I need.

What is ‘Woke?’

Last week someone asked me what it means to be “woke.”I may not have given the best definition, but I said a person says they are “woke” when they “wake up to the reality that everything in life is about power.”It’s a sad way to look at life, but it’s popular in some circles.

Congrats on the milestone

Graduation is an important milestone in the lives of most Americans. Almost nine out of ten Nebraskans graduate high school. Even though most of us graduate, it is still special because it is a rite of passage to adulthood.

Lessons learned at the cancer center

I’ve learned a lot about life in the waiting room of a cancer treatment center in Lincoln. I’ve been thinking about writing about it for several weeks, but last week I met a man who captured it all in one short conversation.

Honest feedback

Feedback is important. It’s not always easy to hear or accept. Just watch an episode of auditions for “American Idol” and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Every year they featured some truly terrible singers.

Don’t exaggerate truth

“If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a million times not to exaggerate!” That’s a funny saying I learned from friends in college. So much is exaggerated these days.

Let’s talk about religion

People say that you shouldn’t talk about politics and religion because it is too divisive, but I don’t shy away from these topics. I don’t bring them up to fight with people. I think we can learn a lot talking about what we believe and listening to others.Today I want to talk about religion itself.

Who is right?

When I met my wife, we had a lot in common. We had both lost a parent to cancer. We both were into electronics, and even compared pocket PC’s on our first date. We both enjoyed watching the TV show “Alias.” I could go on, but I think the differences were also important.

Technology woes

This last week has been a crazy time for technology issues. Last week there were major cell phone issues all over the country followed by a huge cybersecurity incident with a leading tech company in the health and financial sector.

Learn through testing

Do you know someone going through a tough time? We probably all do. People going through tough times sometimes say they are being tested, but I think there is a lot to be learned during hard times. We are blessed. We live in a great state with a mostly stable economy.
