Beware of lies

If you want to see me get upset, lie to me. I have a low tolerance for liars. Perhaps the worst lies are the ones that I want to believe. I need to hear the truth. I won’t learn anything if I’m never challenged to see things a different way.

If it saves one life

Statistically, slow drivers cause more accidents and speeders cause more deaths. Setting speed limits slower saves lives. Maybe the Federal Highway Administration should set the national maximum speed limit to thirty miles per hour. That would reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

Are you a CID person?

When I was in college, I learned a lot about leadership. I managed cleaning on campus before moving to Nebraska to get into IT. In the summer we took crews of students around to different parts of campus to clean what we couldn’t during the school year.

Golden Rules

Going into the new year, I think it’s a good time to focus again on the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I’m not a lawyer and I don’t play one on TV.

A point of order

My son is a talker. I tell people he’s afraid that he will suffocate if he stops talking. But to be honest, he comes by it naturally. My dad and both his brothers are conversationalists, too. You don’t start a conversation with any of them unless you have some time, but it’s worth it.

How do you react?

I enjoy learning word meanings. Sometimes the history of a word’s meaning is very interesting. One of those words is “amuse.” It comes from “muse” which means to “think” and “a” meaning “not.” So “amuse” means to “not think.” I think that fits.

A heritage of thanksgiving

I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving this year. To me, Thanksgiving is a time for family. It’s hard to get everyone together when we have business to attend to here and our family lives in Nebraska, in Indiana, and near Toronto. We’ve got the oldest grandchild on my side of the family.

I am thankful

Thanksgiving is almost here. Blink and it will be Christmas and then 2024. But for now, I want to pause and think about what I am thankful for. I can’t list everything. An exhaustive list would be exhausting for most people to read. Here’s a start. I’m thankful for my family.

Finding truth in T-shirts

This weekend I wore my Purdue shirt on Saturday. I grew up in Indiana and even went to Purdue for a little over a year before transferring. My youngest sister, Kimberly, was a toddler at the time, probably not a lot older than her youngest child’s age is now.

Truth matters

A few weeks ago I was researching for my column and saw a statement at the bottom of a news article. The news agency wanted to make it clear that there was no “moral equivalence” between their positions and those they disagree with. They wanted everyone to know that they held the moral high ground.
