Ready or not, the squash are coming — and so are the bugs

Squash plants are thriving in this summer heat, and for many gardeners, that means the harvest is just beginning. But before you start planning your next zucchini bread or squash casserole, you might need to consider who else is eyeing your crop—and I’m not just talking about your neighbors.

Current issues

Diagnostics of plant issues is one role of Extension horticulturists. In this article, I’ll share some current issues we’re seeing. But first I want to let you know after 43 years in the Platte County Extension office I am retiring July 14.

Reduce weed resistance to herbicides

Weeds have begun to grow. If herbicides are a weed control method used and you tend to apply the same herbicide each year, this could lead to herbicide resistant weeds.Herbicide resistant weeds are plants able to survive labeled application rates of an herbicide that previously killed the weed.

Pruning evergreen conifers

March kicks off the tree pruning season. When it comes to pruning conifers like spruce, pine and yew, March is a little early and here are important tips and rules to keep in mind.As with any plant, pruning should only be done if there is good reason to prune.

Season end garden tasks

Leftover seed laying around, tools yet to be cleaned, and fertilizer and pesticides in need of safe storage. Our warm fall may have delayed some end of season garden tasks that are best not overlooked.

Leaving leaves and plants over winter

You’ve likely have heard the promotion “Leave the Leaves” to protect beneficial insects like pollinators during winter. While it is a good idea to leave fallen tree leaves in garden beds and shrub borders, it is not be the best idea for lawns or other turfgrass areas.

Tree wounds

With an increase in storm damage to trees this year, wounds are more common. When a tree has an open wound or is pruned, I’m asked what needs to be done to the wound or cavity and the answer is usually nothing. This is true even if the wood within the wound is moist, dark and soft.

Read pesticide labels before application

When pesticides are applied, the label needs to be read at purchase and label instructions followed for application. If not, damage or death to nearby plants can happen, especially if herbicides move into soil.
