Lessons learned from Linus Van Pelt

I have mentioned before that I am a nerd. For Christmas this year my mom and dad got me a ring from Lord of the Rings that I wear around my neck. My kids joke that it is my precious. (If you read that last bit as Gollum then I think we can be friends.

Don’t lose track of the reason for the season

I love Christmas. I love the lights on houses. I love Christmas presents under the tree. I can’t wait to watch my kids open their presents on Christmas morning. But as much as I love the holiday season, I have to take a step back and remember the reason for the season.

Christmas through the eyes of children

Growing up my family would always drive around and look at Christmas lights. My parents would load the three kids into the van and we would spend an evening driving all over northwest Indiana to see various elaborate decorative displays.

Will you still be thankful next week?

One of my favorite weeks has finally arrived: Thanksgiving Week! It’s easy to be thankful on Thanksgiving. Family gets together. There is a feast of great food. All of your blessings are so apparent. But what about on Friday? What about next week? Will you still be thankful?

Making memories for a new generation

Hello friends! We are just a few short weeks away from Thanksgiving and it got me to thinking about some holidays from my childhood. When I was a kid my grandparents lived just a few towns away in northwest Indiana. We saw them all the time.

Looking back at a fun fall sports season

The fall sports season is in the books and there are only a few teams around the state still playing football and volleyball. Fullerton and Twin River completed a successful football, volleyball, softball, cross country and girls golf seasons.

Runners (and their fans) are a different breed

Runners are a different breed. Last week I was able to check off the state cross country championships off my list of big events I have had the privilege of covering.

Charlie: Dad, I can’t wait for vacation . . .

Sometimes I am left shaking my head after talking to my kids. Now I understand why that show “Kids Say the Darndest Things” was so popular. This was a real conversation with Charlie over the weekend. Charlie: I can’t wait for vacation.

Time to dust off the old Presidential Bingo Card

I don’t know about you, but I love politics. And I hate it. I love it for its entertainment value. But I hate what it turns people into. Gone are the days of old when two people could have a differing political opinion and they could still get along. Gone are the days of Election Day coverage.
