Monday morning quarterback: The voters got it wrong

You got it wrong. Last week voters had a chance to give the students in the Twin River school district a facility they can be proud of. Instead, 659 people said no. So now the district is stuck. They are forced to put more bandaids on a 1929 building that is falling apart. And why?

Memories of a past life

They say that kids say the darnedest things, but they also ask some of the most interesting questions. Over the weekend we were driving to Penny’s first volleyball match. When we load the entire Holtz crew in the van, normally we will play some sort of a road game.

When did Christmas get moved to September?

Hello friends! Another month is in the books. Last week we flipped to a new page on the calendar (do you even use a calendar anymore?), and pretty soon the leaves on the trees will start to turn colors, and the evenings will get cooler.

Hello friends! The Nance County Journal is pleased to announce that this week is the first week of the annual football contest. If you turn your newspaper over to page 8, you will find the week one games hidden within the ads of our 16 sponsors. I say hidden, but you don’t have to look too deeply.

Welcome back sports fans

It has been a busy couple of weeks in the office as we were gearing up for the fall sports season. Summer is a time when the high school sports world slows down a little. But all that changes now. Sports are back.

Technology is a game-changer for newspapers

How has technology changed the way you do business? Newspapers, like all businesses, have seen plenty of changes thanks to technology.

Taking career advice from a fictional supervillain

How important is a plan to your daily life? Do you make a plan and stick to it? Are you methodical in every aspect of your life? For me, if I am honest, being a newspaper owner was never part of the plan. I always thought I would end up being a teacher and a coach.

Be a bother; it’s better than the alternative

I nearly lost him and I never knew it. Over the weekend I found out that a friend from my youth group growing up had been struggling with depression. He shared in a Facebook post how he fought the battle by himself, fell into a bottle and almost took his life last year. It broke my heart.
