Jim Horn

Jim Horn, 76, of Schuyler, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023, from injuries received in a motor vehicle accident near Morse Bluff.

Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish, St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Schuyler. Rev. Gerry Gonderinger and Rev. Jairo Enrique Congote will officiate the services.

Friends and family can pay their respects on Monday from 3-7 p.m. at St. Augustine's Catholic Church. Parish Rosary is Monday at 7 p.m. at the church.

Additional visitation will be Tuesday from 8:30-10 a.m. at Kracl Funeral Chapel, Schuyler. Committal with Military Rites and Final Call is Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Fullerton Cemetery in Fullerton.

Mr. Horn was born in Fullerton on Jan. 13, 1947, to George and Donna Horn. He was raised on the family farm with his brother, Jerry, and sister, Connie, in rural Fullerton. Jim married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Kathy (Nichols) Horn, and they were inseparable for their 57 years of marriage.  After living in Germany during his military service, they eventually settled in Schuyler and raised their four children.

Jim worked at Cargill for 38 years. After retirement he worked part-time for Schuyler Co-op of Richland, Kracl Funeral Chapels, delivered ambulances and fire trucks for Danko Emergency Equipment and was on harvest crews for many area farmers. He was the busiest retired man in the county.

Jim and Kathy worked hard to serve their community.  Jim was a 50-year member and Senior Captain of Schuyler Fire and Rescue; Past President and Past Assistant Chief as well as Secretary Treasurer of Schuyler Rural Fire Protection District #3.  He was a 50-year member, Past President and Past Director of Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association (Jim was also known by a select few as The Godfather) and Member of the National Volunteer Fire Council.  Jim and his wife had a lifelong passion for the volunteer fire service and had a profound impact on the volunteer fire community. He was also a lifetime member of Fullerton American Legion Post 151, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, member of Divine Mercy Parish, past member of the parish council and current member and Past President of the Schuyler Golf Club.

Jim enjoyed meeting up for coffee with the guys at Parkview, taking Zoe to the fire station, playing golf with good buddies, his children, and grandchildren, sipping Captain and Coke from his Yeti and enjoying a Dutch Master cigar.

He was always there to lend a hand, offer advice-whether you wanted it or not and help tackle any project or problem that came his way.  Always a straight shooter with the best advice and biggest heart.

He was many things to many people, but most of all he was a good man.

He is survived by his wife Kathy; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Mark Parsons of Schuyler; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Doug MacRae of Cincinnati, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Cindy Horn of Fullerton; and daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Bryan Scherbarth, Omaha; grandchildren, Brad and Kelli Parsons, Michael and Molly Parsons, A.J. and Kelsey Parsons, Jonathan Parsons and Madison Schwarting, Walter and Elizabeth Hernandez, and Josh Parsons; Alex, Emily, Cameron and Peyton MacRae; Justin, Paige and Kyle Horn; Rosalie and Grayson Scherbarth; great-grandchildren, Beau, Quinn, Tyke, Hayes, Huck, Cael, Willcox, Mack, Leah and Mark; sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Terry Pachunka; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mic and Linda Nichols; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Colette and Pat Dubas; and many loved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Donna Horn; parents-in-law, Keith and Henrietta Nichols; and brother, Jerry Horn.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Kracl Funeral Chapel in Schuyler.
