A mutiny is brewing in the Holtz house

It took longer than I thought it would, but I have a mutiny on my hands.Easter is Sunday and this will be the second year in a row where my children will not be visiting Grandma’s house to celebrate the weekend. I really should have seen this coming.Let me back up a little.

Keep your focus where it belongs

My name is Rick and I get distracted easily. It does not matter if the distraction comes from a phone call, a text message, a carrier pigeon or a smoke signal . . .Sorry a shaggy dog just walked past my office window.. . . Distractions come in all forms.

State of the Union was more of a campaign speech

Last week, President Joe Biden went to Congress and delivered his State of the Union speech. Well, at least that was what was supposed to happen. At some point in the two mile drive from the White House and the Capitol, some plucky campaign worker must have switched the speech.

I was taught a harsh lesson by a six-year-old this weekend. Charlie was helping clean up after lunch on Sunday. I made a feast fit for a royal family (OK, really it was nuggets, fish sticks and french fries. But my kids loved it).

Be heard during the election season

Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has them. Unlike belly buttons though, your opinion can appear in your favorite community newspaper. Newspapers have long been seen as the town square for sharing ideas.

There are three sides to every story

One thing I have learned over the years is that the true story is not always the first thing that comes out. Some people like to say that there are two sides to every story, but that is not really the case. There are three sides: One person’s side, the other person’s side and then the truth.

Superbowl commercials left me scratching my head

The Superbowl has come and gone, and if I am honest, the commercials left a lot to be desired. Sure, you had some good ones. But there was not really any one commercial that left me laughing like they have in previous years. I always love when the E-Trade Baby makes an appearance.

Cookies and donuts can fix any bad mood

Moods can be a fickle thing. You can be walking along, having a great day, and then out of nowhere your mood can shift 180 degrees. I woke up in a bad mood one recent weekend. I couldn’t begin to tell you what put me in my bad mood (probably an argument I had with myself in my head).

NSAA has a State Wrestling PR problem

You plan for the worst and hope for the best. And maybe, if you are lucky, you can make it out unscathed. In recent weeks there have been grumblings in the high school wrestling world leading up to the state tournament.

Say what you mean and mean what you say

My daughter, Penny, finds it funny that I am not the most limber person out there. Well, last week she would have been pretty amazed at how flexible I have become. I managed to find a way to put my foot squarely in my mouth.
