An open letter to the Class of 2024

I’ve been checking the mailbox every day for the last month. My invitation to speak at graduation probably got lost in the mail. But, never fear. I have a pretty nice platform to address the soon to be graduating class of 2024 right here in pages of the good old NCJ.

Storms can be scary, but they don’t last forever

Everyone is scared of something. It is perfectly normal.People are scared by different things. The fear does not have to make sense. Some people are scared of getting sick, and if they read about a disease, they will be convinced they have it.Personally, I am not fond of clowns.

War is brewing in the Holtz house

There is a war brewing in my house. You can just feel it in the air. If we had pets, I’m pretty sure they would be acting strangely. This war is not a long-standing family feud. It’s not between the Hatfields and McCoys or the Capulets and Montagues.

Popular opinion is not always right

Just because a majority of people think something does not mean it is right.A majority of people in my household would like to eat at McDonald’s every night. If it was put up to a vote, they would probably never clean their room. That’s the problem with majority rule or going by a popular opinion.

A mutiny is brewing in the Holtz house

It took longer than I thought it would, but I have a mutiny on my hands.Easter is Sunday and this will be the second year in a row where my children will not be visiting Grandma’s house to celebrate the weekend. I really should have seen this coming.Let me back up a little.

Keep your focus where it belongs

My name is Rick and I get distracted easily. It does not matter if the distraction comes from a phone call, a text message, a carrier pigeon or a smoke signal . . .Sorry a shaggy dog just walked past my office window.. . . Distractions come in all forms.

State of the Union was more of a campaign speech

Last week, President Joe Biden went to Congress and delivered his State of the Union speech. Well, at least that was what was supposed to happen. At some point in the two mile drive from the White House and the Capitol, some plucky campaign worker must have switched the speech.

I was taught a harsh lesson by a six-year-old this weekend. Charlie was helping clean up after lunch on Sunday. I made a feast fit for a royal family (OK, really it was nuggets, fish sticks and french fries. But my kids loved it).

Be heard during the election season

Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has them. Unlike belly buttons though, your opinion can appear in your favorite community newspaper. Newspapers have long been seen as the town square for sharing ideas.

There are three sides to every story

One thing I have learned over the years is that the true story is not always the first thing that comes out. Some people like to say that there are two sides to every story, but that is not really the case. There are three sides: One person’s side, the other person’s side and then the truth.
