The word “advent” is one we don’t use much in everyday conversation. But now that Thanksgiving Day is past, you may hear the word tossed about from time to time. You might even find yourself using the word in conversation. So … what does the word mean, anyway? What is Advent?

Ten years ago Nov. 27, 2013 Four members of the Fullerton FFA Chapter competed in the State Land Judging competition, placing fourth and qualified for the National Land Judging contest. The qualifying team consisted of Ethan Lesiak, Seth Wetovick, Alyssa Hambleton and T.J. Ostransky.

As a child, I spent hours each December poring over the pages of the Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog. My imagination ran wild as I read the descriptions and studied the pictures. And though I knew I would get very few (if any) of the items advertised, I had fun looking.

CENTRAL CITY — Everyone loves a Christmas Tea and Merrick County Historical Museum is pleased to sponsor the special event again this holiday season in conjunction with Central City’s festivities of “Rockin’Around the Courthouse Square.” The celebration be held on the afternoon of Dec. 3.

Just outside the back door of the farmhouse where I grew up was a large “cat pan”. It was there my mom would conveniently dispose of table scraps, as well as any leftovers past their prime. She knew that sooner or later our cats or dog would show up to eat.
