Six words seem to be a legislative curse

“I believe I have the votes.”Those six words have become the curse of the Nebraska Legislature. The buzzkill. The harbinger of failure.

War is brewing in the Holtz house

There is a war brewing in my house. You can just feel it in the air. If we had pets, I’m pretty sure they would be acting strangely. This war is not a long-standing family feud. It’s not between the Hatfields and McCoys or the Capulets and Montagues.

Cost of chemo

Recently I logged into my health insurance, and I like seeing things process and how much I owe. I worked in health insurance for a while. I have experience in a hospital, entering insurance into the computer and also on the billing side. I billed insurance companies and would record what they paid.

Is it immigration or is it an invasion?

Culture consists of a society’s politics (its government and economy), religion and values, customs, language, institutions and the most basic unit of culture—the family.

Lessons learned at the cancer center

I’ve learned a lot about life in the waiting room of a cancer treatment center in Lincoln. I’ve been thinking about writing about it for several weeks, but last week I met a man who captured it all in one short conversation.

Popular opinion is not always right

Just because a majority of people think something does not mean it is right.A majority of people in my household would like to eat at McDonald’s every night. If it was put up to a vote, they would probably never clean their room. That’s the problem with majority rule or going by a popular opinion.

Honest feedback

Feedback is important. It’s not always easy to hear or accept. Just watch an episode of auditions for “American Idol” and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Every year they featured some truly terrible singers.

Free to disagree

The most profitable class I took in college was debate. That year the topic debated in every college across the country was whether passive restraint systems should be mandatory or optional on all new cars.

April is busy month

Here it is April already. April means spring, showers hopefully. April also means taxes.Tax day is coming up. We also have Earth day and Arbor day in April.April seems like the month to have activities. Yes, track and golf is during the day, so weekends are filled with other things.

Nebraska unicameral makes headlines for the wrong reason, again

“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.” – Thumper “The tongue of the wise makes knowledge attractive, but the mouth of fools blurts out foolishness.
